Dr Frik Potgieter is in private practice at Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic, in Pretoria, South Africa. He is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Stellenbosch, the College of Medicine of South Africa, the Medical School of the University of Pretoria, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He trains and speaks both locally and internationally on refractive surgery techniques. He was responsible for refining the LASIK technique with regards to the enhancement of night vision, as well as the development of nomograms for the latest excimer laser technology. He participated, as part of 20 international sites, in the initial studies to gain the European CE mark for approval of the Artiflex phakic lens, and also is a key opinion leader on the European panel of the multinational ophthalmic company, Bausch and Lomb. Recently, he performed the first DSAEK (Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty) procedure, a breakthrough in corneal transplantation, in South Africa.
Primary Interests
He is actively involved in research within the field of refractive, lens and corneal transplant surgery, and is presently working on a project to treat irregular corneas with laser, in collaboration with colleagues in the United States and Germany.
Recognizing the need for the accumulation of accurate statistics and data, he is involved in the ongoing development of software solutions for data capture and analysis within the medical field.
He also serves as a member of the international council of the International Society of Refractive Surgery of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (ISRS/AAO). He is a board member of the African Society of Refractive Surgery (ASRS) and also an executive committee member of the Southern African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (SASCRS). He is also an invited member of the esteemed International Intra-ocular Implant Club (IIIC), the oldest society in the world to promote the field of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
