A couple of years ago, I consulted an Ophthalmologist elsewhere, and was recommended to have a LASIK procedure in order to correct my eyesight.

As I returned home from the hospital after the LASIK procedure, the flap, which was created as part of the procedure on my right eye, dislocated and was lost. The result was that I was left with an extremely uncomfortable eye, which was also very difficult to see with, especially during night time, as I experienced a lot of glare and halo’s.

In desperation, I experimented and eventually used a +5 diopter contact lens to blur the eye in order to reduce the visual distortions. Due to the complication from the LASIK procedure, the eye was practically useless for everyday tasks.

This situation continued for ± 4 years until, I was advised to visit the Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic. A specialized option in excimer laser corneal refractive surgery, namely a topography assisted laser treatment, was offered to address my problem. As this technology was in it’s development phase at the time, it was explicitly explained to me that the procedure will be of an experimental nature, and that no guarantees could be given regarding the outcome. This was, however, the only means apart from a corneal transplant, which could restore the sight in my right eye, as the cornea of my eye was grossly irregular and scarred, resulting in the difficulties I experienced.

Following the treatment by means of a “transepithelial PRK technique”, it took about 2½ - 3 weeks before my vision was restored to almost perfect in my right eye.

I am very satisfied with the outcome, and I want to offer my gratitude to the Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic for a job well done.

Dear Dr Potgeiter

I would like to thank you very much for the work you did on my eyes in August.  My vision is still perfect - it is far better than wearing contact lenses or glasses, there is no dryness any more and everything is very sharp (at risk of repeating myself!).  I thought I had become used to seeing everything so well when travelling home and then I suddenly saw the road I lived on and it hit me again...  I am still marvelling at this miracle.

I would also like to thank your staff for their professionalism, it gave both Ros and I great confidence in continuing with the procedure, which was a little unnerving but not half as much as it could have been.

And I would like to thank you for being so understanding of our circumstances, that we were far from home, travelling with small children and families to consider.  We really appreciated your tolerance.

I still do intend on popping in when I can so you can check my eyes again.

Dear Dr Potgieter,

My vision is really amazing. I cannot remember ever seeing so well with my glasses. Thank you so much. It is incredible to see things close and far and inbetween so crisply all at the same time. It is almost a new perception of depth, which may sound strange. I am not sure that was ever achieved with glasses. I really have had no trouble at all with them.

I was also so encouraged by your love for the Lord, the excellence in your practice and how you gave Him glory for the healing process. My husband and I work here in Zim trying to reach University students for Christ. Our hope is that many will be inspired to live such lives for Christ out there in the working world one day.

Hi Dr Potgieter,

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all you have done in assisting me with the problems I am having with my eyes, if it where not for you I would not be where I am right now with these hard contact lenses they are really helping me a lot I have 90% in my right and 95% vision in my left eye which is more than I had hoped for!
